Candyman was released in 1992 and starred Tony Todd as the lead character, Candyman. Candyman is based on the short story “The Forbidden” by Clive Barker.
Helen is studying in college about urban myths and comes across the legend of Candyman. Her professor tells her the real story about Candyman. Candyman was the son of a slave who became prosperous after the civil war making shoes and also became a well known artist doing portraits for families, etc. Candyman is killed by his lover’s Father after their Love is discovered and his right hand is cut off by a rusty saw and his body covered in honey which the bees stung him to death.
Now Candyman can be summoned by saying his name five times which he appears with a rusty hook and has bees all around him, which is the first noticeable thing when he is summoned. He then kills whomever summons him with his rusty hook.
Candyman does have an underlying tale of love and it’s a tragic story but I genuinely loved watching this movie. Tony Todd just is an amazing actor and truly brings Candyman to life throughout the series as several more movies were made following the first.
If you love urban legends and a bit of gore on the side then this movie you’ll want to watch.
